El Tranvia de Sierra Nevada

The tram from Granada to the Sierra Nevada. Work was started on this in 1921 with the initial section from Vistillas area in Granada to El Charcon and then from there to the Sierra Nevada. The route followed the river Genil to Maitena, which is where you can walk a section of the tramway back towards Granada today, to the town of Pinos Genil, having fourteen tunnels and twenty bridges. In 1925 the first section between Granada and Guejar Sierra was opened and in 1927 to Maintena. The next section from Maintena to Barranco de San Juan was not completed until 1944 due to economic difficulties and the civil war. The 24 kilometres of the completed tram line was closed in 1974 and part of it has been flooded when they built the dam at Canales. The tram is at El Dornajo, the Visitors Centre, on the main road to Sierra Nevada.
